Among the gifts Howe received in recognition of his 545th goal was an oil painting presented on behalf of the Canadiens by Jean Beliveau. Montreal’s captain, a good friend off the ice, confessed that he was glad to see Howe finally score. “I’ve been carrying this thing around for days,” he said.
